Burns Real Food for Dogs

The following table is based on a 15Kg bag of our adult maintenance diet at £35.99 (excluding Venison and Duck).

The adult feeding guide is a maximum of 10 grams of food per 1 Kg of dog weight.

For weight loss the daily amount fed should be based on the dog’s IDEAL/TARGET weight not the ACTUAL weight.

AVERAGE WEIGHTS:
WESTIE = 7-10 Kg
BORDER COLLIE = 14-22Kg
LABRADOR = 25-34Kg
GSD = 35-43Kg
NEWFOUNDLAND = 50-68Kg

Note: Requirements depend on the amount of exercise, age, breed, environmental factors and individual variation. The above can be used as a general guide, together with good sense and experience.

Giant Breeds

With giant breed dogs the difference between appetite and requirement is vast.
Large dogs have smaller digestive tracts, compared to smaller dogs. The large breeds digestive tract can represent 2.7% of their total body weight, whereas a small dogs digestive tract can total up to 7% of the body weight. (Meyer et Coll 1993).
The Burns feeding guide is 10 grams of food per Kg of body weight (maximum). This general rule applies for dogs up to 50Kg (8 stone). After this, dogs are classed as giant breed and do not require volume feeding.
We would not usually suggest more than 550-600g per day of Burns (for adult dogs) for ANY breed of dog. The dangers of over-feeding, especially a large breed dog include gastric dilation (also known as bloat).
