Burns are going greener!
As a company, we at Burns are well aware of our environmental responsibilities. A small group of Head Office staff meet regularly to look at how we might address the many issues regarding waste, recycling and energy usage. Our new office has solar heating and utilises natural sheep wool as insulation. We segregate our waste for recycling, and are looking at the materials that we use for packaging to ensure that these can easily be recycled.

As part of this effort we are part of the Green Dragon scheme which encourages environmental reporting and accountability. With their help we now have an environmental policy in place, and we're working toward other EU recognised targets.

If you've not tried our Training Treats before, then maybe now is the time to start; they are small 100% fish cubes which dogs love (and they are sourced from managed Icelandic fish stocks.)

Burns Training Treats retail at £1.49 a pack.

Government Visit

On 3rd of September 2007 Huw Irranca-Davies, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales, visited Burns Pet Nutrition Ltd in Kidwelly as part of a fact finding tour of Welsh businesses.

Government visit

Mr Irranca-Davies (pictured above centre with John and Tegwen Burns) said: "I was greatly impressed with all I saw on my recent visit to Burns Pet Foods in Kidwelly. This family-run firm's pioneering approach to natural holistic pet foods has created a thriving business employing 60 staff from the Town and neighbouring communities. I wish owners John and Tegwen Burns best wishes with their new ventures, including the introduction of a new moist petfood range, and future expansion plans. I am sure the business will continue to grow from strength to strength."

Go Green with Burns!
Picking up your dog's waste has never been a pleasant task, though with current legislation it's becoming a necessity. However, we're now selling fully compostible poop bags, which means that you can give yourself a pat on the back for going green, and not putting yet another polybag in the dustbin!

Stray Dogs and Irresponsible Owners
A decade of campaigning reveals that the nation’s dog owners can’t afford to be complacent – leading charity cites the current trend for dogs as fashion accessories as a major cause of stray dog numbers. Read More

Pet Food Secrets?
There are web sites and newsletters circulating 'Pet Food Secrets' or a 'Pet Food Conspiracy' by manufacturers of pet food, with horror stories concerning commercial pet food and ingredients.
Our nutritionists have put together some information about these

A Happy Customer!

"As owner of a 2 year old Lhasa Apso I’d just like to let you know how fantastic my dog (Charlie)’s coat has been since changing over to Burns.
I used to have to bath him every 2 to 3 weeks because he smelled very ‘doggie.’ Since changing his food he hasn’t needed a bath between his trips to be bathed and clipped which are every 7 to 8 weeks.
This has made a huge difference to both of us………especially as the bathroom usually ended up looking as if a whirlwind had gone through it.
His coat is also silkier and he seems livelier than ever.
I cannot recommend this food enough."

Taking Control!

The Scottish SPCA has called for parents across Scotland to take more responsibility for the behaviour of their children after another sickening catalogue of violence against animals over the past year.

Launched during Scottish Animal Week, the charity’s plea is supported by shocking statistics which show that attacks have risen by almost 20 percent compared to the last two years and that even more are taking place during school holidays.

A life on the Ocean Wave!

An intrepid explorer from Kidwelly is going to be thrown in at the deep end as he plans a round-the- world yacht trip, despite being a sailing novice.

Twenty-one-year-old Bryn Edwards will be sailing as part of a team of four in a 50-boat regatta which will leave Gibraltar on Wednesday, October 17.

"Three weeks across the Atlantic is the one thing I'm most worried about." said Bryn "We won't see any land for the whole time, and despite the fact that we will be part of a 50-boat fleet, we are unlikely to see any of them until we reach land."

The boat, which is a 45ft wooden hulled vessel, is owned by friends, and this is how Bryn got the opportunity. He said: "It's an old boat, but I'm sure it will be able to withstand the challenge."

The regatta is an expedition, not a competitive event, island hopping at places like the Caribbean, Galapagos Islands, Australia, and the Suez Canal, sometimes visiting places only accessible by boat.

Thanks to support from Burns Pet Nutrition, Bryn is close to raising the £7,000 to £10,000 needed for the trip.

Dog Fighting Still Goes On
It's a sad fact, but despite recent publicity in the media, dog fighting rings still exist. The RSPCA has a 24 hour cruelty line and is asking for people to call confidentially to let them know where fights are taking place.
